Statement of Intent My textile pieces take the form of flat cubes, a two dimensional representation of three dimensional space. The work is given an illusion of depth through the use of tone and contrasted colour which accentuates or deaccentuates a given area. These pieces are a fusion of domestic and logical forms, where architectural space has met the interior space of 'the home'. The softly quilted 'hard' geometric shapes are a 'female'/fabric take on a 'male'/minimalist discourse. The shapes are meticulously pieced together and hand quilted (the home), where as the forms are representative of industrially fabricated cubes such as were constructed by Robert Morris in the 1960's. The use of the quilt in this context transforms a functional item into the non-functional, thus blurring the boundaries of the restrictive craft or art question. |
