Artist Statement

Sally Bowden’s work has a strong relationship with words. These words have substance within her life and, because communication has a variable concept depending on the speaker and the listener, are full of ever-changing emotional content, greatly affected by external conditions and mood. The cycle of life turns at differing speeds: we all accept words in individual ways and it is this concept that is explored and manifests itself as an integral part of Sally’s working practice. Words spoken may initially be perceived as derogatory and these words which once ‘hurt’ may eventually become blunt and relatively harmless and, in most cases, used to establish a positive representation.

It is this understanding of meaning, which interest Sally and has motivated her current studio practice.
Often using her own emotional response to the spoken word, Sally invites the viewer of her work into her private space. Her personal emotions expressed within the work can only be guessed, but Sally believes that all who see the creations will be able to relate to the inner generic message. This gently hidden communication is intended to be the catalyst for further thought and self-awareness.

Sally does not let her self be governed by the expected but lets her emotions direct and inspire her.
