Maria M J Cook
Artist Statement I am at the final stage of my course in Fine art I graduate next year and hope to do my MA later after a much deserved break. I am also a practicing artist outside the college. My paintings are done using wax, oil, acrylic, ink. I like to work in all sorts of mediums. My medium is encaustic often I get questioned about this and how blah de blah do I do it. Encaustic art is known as being a very resilient art form, it is painting with pigments mixed with hot wax. True encaustic painting is a method in which coloured wax is permanently ‘burned’ into an absorbent backing such as plaster, canvas and some woods. The technique of laying wax on a non absorbent backing is today usually considered of as encaustic wax. Plutarch also plays tribute to its durability: A
beautiful woman leaves in the heart of an indifferent man an image
as fleeting as a reflection on water. But in the heart of one who
loves the image is fixed with fire like an encaustic painting which
time can never obliterate. |
