Heather Defferary
Artist Statement In 2006 my work has often consisted of seemingly disconnected fragments, subtle hints ambiguously placed between figuration and abstraction. No one subject encompasses the work; fragments of emotions and issues are the details explored. Detailed images of the ghosts and sadness of previous work being diluted and despatched by colour and simpler forms.
My recent three dimensional works simply symbolise the sometimes unspeakable situations of some lives lived within our society today by using images instantly recognisable as symbols of happiness, of memories that belong with happiness during childhoods where we flourished; but these same images, I know to others, signify utter horror, bad ‘rememberings’ and sadness – Ironic Images.
The materials I use in my two dimensional work is often recycled, paperwork used for one purpose I re-use - architectural plans and window dressing. Folded paper decorated and torn into shapes instantly recognisable, alluding to the human figure – descriptions with simplicity.
The work for the Degree Show was stimulated by knowledge gained recently, shocking realisation of the numbers of children who go missing every day and the often totally unacceptable reasons why they would rather live on the street than at home with their families.
Children should be safe, loved and cherished –
this is not always the case. |
